Fire Prevention Week 2026: A major awareness campaign on fires caused by cigarette butts

4 octobre 2026

MONTRÉAL, October 4, 2026 / RMC / – As part of Fire Prevention Week, taking place from October 4 to 11, 2026, the Montréal Fire Department (SIM) will launch a major public awareness campaign aimed at preventing fires caused by cigarette butts and other smoking materials.

Despite a better understanding of the risks, fires involving smoking materials remain a significant concern. In 2025, 411 building fires in Montréal were caused by smoking materials or open-flame items. These incidents can result in major property damage, the displacement of families, and in some cases, put lives at risk.

A Well-Known Ambassador Joins the Campaign

To broaden the reach of this campaign, the SIM has partnered with Georges Laraque. A former Montreal Canadiens player and a well-known public figure, he lends his voice to the campaign, “I Can’t Be Everywhere.” Staying true to the protector role he embodied on the ice, Georges Laraque reminds people that he cannot be everywhere to prevent risky behaviours. That is why everyone has a role to play in helping prevent fires caused by cigarette butts.

Videos, social media content and public education materials will be distributed to raise awareness about the risks associated with improperly discarded cigarette butts and encourage people to adopt safer behaviours to help prevent fires.

A few simple actions can make all the difference

The SIM reminds the public that adopting safe cigarette butt disposal practices remains essential to reducing the risk of fire.
